The 2010 Snow Camp was the 23rd that we have done at the Amboy 4-H Environmental Center. It is nestled up in the Tug Hill Plateau where you can always count on having snow. We had 26 people this year. The mix had more adults than normal and made for a more relaxed weekend. We went over February 12-14.
On Friday Pat Carney came with her son Riley and led us in snowshoe training and then a hike into the high country. Pat has been doing this for us for over 20 years. The wild game tracks were bountiful. We even kicked out 2 deer.
On Saturday morning we went hiking around the many acres that Amboy has to offer. Then in the afternoon we went cross country skiing at the Osceola Ski Complex. Every year there are improvements. Hugh Quinn and his team did a wonderful job, as always, outfitting our crew with the latest in ski equipment. The views as we skied were breath taking. On the way back to the camp we saw several deer feeding and an eagle holding a kill down on the ground.
Our Sunday morning church service opened with “snow ball sharing”. Each person shared a blessing from the weekend while holding a snow ball then passed it along. This is always a time of tears and laughter…sometimes at the same time.
In the evenings we always play a host a table games aimed at fostering old fashioned fun and relationship building. Did you ever hear how loud the game of “Pit” can be? Especially when Bev is there.
Jon & Kim Speed (from Lost Cause Ministries in Dallas) came to be our teacher for the weekend. He taught on “Faithfulness”. When Jesus comes he will either say “Well done though good and faithful servant” or “I do not know you”. Jon looked at what that kind of faithfulness looks like from God’s perspective, not ours. It was a challenging message. What a great blessing to have them with us for the weekend. We love them both dearly!
